Rev. Gregory A. Boyd
The Times has yet another article today about the so-called Evangelical Left. This time they're featuring evangelical pastor Rev. Gregory A. Boyd. Boyd has a congregation on the outskirts of St. Paul. The Times considers him to be a progressive and even titled the story: "Disowning Conservative Politics, Evangelical Pastor Rattles Flock." Nevertheless, Boyd is the first to admit that he is "no liberal." Furthermore, "he is opposed to abortion and thinks homosexuality is not God’s ideal." Boyd won't even discuss his political persuasion and remains cagey about criticizing the policies of Bush. Needless to say, if Boyd was truly "disowning conservative politics" he'd be standing up for the rights of gays, women, and the people we are killing overseas.
A few weeks ago, the Times had a similar story on a so-called progressive evangelical Rob Bell. We spoke with Bell while researching our book, The Sinner's Guide to the Evangelical Right. He's absolutely more progressive than, say, James Dobson, but like Boyd he's on the wrong side on abortion, gay rights, and he refuses to be critical of Bush. In other words, he's no progressive. The Times needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Bell and Boyd are not "disowning conservative politics."
